"Giving Children A Voice andA Choice"

Though America follows a “best interests of the child”law on paper, our nation’s custody laws actually harm children, says Mary Ann Masonof the School of Social Welfare. She wrote The custody wars in 1999, a book thatserves as a wake-up call to the problems American children face during custody battles.

She supports giving young children “to the person who hasbeen the primary parent during the earlynurturing years.” Once the children areolder, she believes they should be able to change their custody arrangements.

Mason has also started researching stepfamilies. She wants Americato change its laws to reflect reality: many children grow up with three or more parentsbecause of divorce, and she believes we should give rights and responsibilities to all fitparents.

Mason, who has gone through her own divorce and custody battle, has been accepting any and all invitations to give speeches in support of morechild-focused laws. Sociologist Harry Edwards could be the first person ever to list hisheight and weight on his curriculum vitae. But when you’re 6’8 and weigh 260pounds, it’s probably worth noting.
