My Story

Meet Dr. Roy Shapiro

I have included this section so you can get to know me abetter and have an idea of how my interest in coaching smokers hasdeveloped.

My professional training is as a clinical psychologist and Ihave been practicing Psychology since 1974. I currently have an appointment on the staff of Lenox HillHospital in New York.

My interest in smoking cessationstarted with my owninability to quit smoking. See my storyfor the details. Since 1988 I have studied the literature on quitting smoking, nicotine dependence, addictive processes and coaching. I  havetaken additional training in smoking cessation with the American Lung Association of New York, Quit Smart and with other organizations. Ihave attended lectures, reviewed commercial products andhave struggled to understand what are the most effective ways toassist smokers in quitting. I have  incorporated  many of the new research findings into the QuitTools Coach.

I have coached  smokers in many different formats. I haverun quit smoking groups for the American Lung Association as well as providing individualand quit smoking services for smokers in my private practice.

I have had the opportunity to give  presentationsfor bothprofessional audiences and for smokers. In the Fallof 1999  I spoke at the New YorkState Psychological Associations Convention with a presentation entitled The LastPuff.  The presentation wasdesigned to help psychologists incorporate smoking cessation into theirpractices.
