My Picture Album:

Note: For centuries the development of a baby was a mystery enshrouded in the womb. Thanks to technology, we are now able to view the baby as it develops and grows. The facts below are medically recognized. This progress

First day - Conception

The sperm and egg join in your fallopian tube to form a unique human being, me! 46 chromosomes combine, 23 from you, and 23 from my father, which pre-determine all of my physical characteristics, the color of my eyes, the curl in my hair, skin tone, and how tall I'll be.

1st Week

Once inside your uterus, the little me searches for a nice place to implant, where I actually burrows beneath the surface of the uterus. The yolk sac, shown on the left, produces my blood cells during the early weeks of my life. At this stage I am less than half a centimeter long, but developing rapidly. My backbone, spinal column, and nervous system are forming and my kidneys, liver, and intestines are taking shape.

2 Weeks

I produce some hormones, which stop your menstrual cycle. Now something called a placenta has formed, which connects me directly to you, so you can feed me and take care of me. Even though we are directly connected, by blood cells stay separate from yours, and might even be of a different type. Because I am so small, Please be careful with what you eat, because bad drugs and alcohol can really harm me, because I receive whatever you put in your mouth now.

3 Weeks

By now, you know I am here, and you think about me a lot. I am about the size of a raisin now. By day twenty-one, my tiny heart has begun beating. The neural tube enlarges into three parts, soon to become a very complex brain. My arms, legs, eyes and ears are noticeable.

5 Weeks

My facial features are now visible. I have a mouth and tongue. My eyes have darkened as pigment is produced. I small little hands and feet. My major muscle system is developed, and I begin to practice moving around. I have my own blood type, distinct from yours. These blood cells are produced by my own the liver now instead of the yolk sac.

6 Weeks

Voru Reservacion de hotel baratoI am bigger now; about a centimeter long. The amniotic sac protects me. Inside the sac, I like to swim and move around gracefully. My arms and legs are longer, and my fingers can be plainly seen. My toes will develop in the next few days. Now, doctors can measure my brain waves.

8 Weeks

Twenty tiny baby teeth are forming in my gums. My stomach produces juices for digestion, and my kidneys have now begun to work. If you were to touch me, I would respond. I now can feel pain, if someone tried to hurt me. I can now hear the rushing fluid around me as I swim around.

10 Weeks

My vocal chords are complete, and I sometimes cry (silently). My brain is fully formed, and if you placed an object in my hand, I would curve my fingers around it. I have started to suck my thumb, although it is a bad habit. I can now squint, swallow, and wrinkle my forehead. I have distinct fingerprints on my hands, that make me a unique person, unlike any other.

12 Weeks

By now, you might even feel me as I kick and move around. I open and close my mouth a lot, as I drink and breath the amniotic fluid, and sometimes I drink too much and go to the bathroom...

13 Weeks

cheap hotel in LyonI now have the same taste buds as you and am able to enjoy some of what you eat. Just so you know, I like sweet things, more than sour or bitter. It is now easy to tell if I am a boy or girl, and I have fingernails and toenails.

14 Weeks

Now I am about 28 cm long, and I weigh about 300 grams. I make your tummy stick out a little now. I can hear your voice when you speak to me and I like some of the music you play. I am totally complete, I have all my parts and they all work wonderfully. I know when you are happy and sad. If you could see me, you would see that I have eyebrows and eyelashes, and you would think I look cute.

ERROR MSG4-5 Months (22 weeks)

I can hear and recognize your voice, and if I hear a loud sound I might jump in surprise. Though I am very small and fragile, I am growing rapidly and with great care, I could possibly survive if born now. Guess what Mommy! We are halfway now, that means I'll be born before you know it!

ERROR MSG6 Months (26 weeks)

ERROR MSGI am covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. A waxy substance called vernix protects my tender skin. You might see some of this stuff on me when I am born, but don't worry it goes away real quick. My oil and sweat glands are working now. I am not as comfortable as I used to be now that I am getting real big. So, I wiggle lots trying to find a comfortable position.

7 months (30 weeks)

Well, I am putting on lots of weight, as layer of fat develops and I am almost ready to be born. Did you know that a little light comes through your tummy allowing me to see some shapes outside, and things inside your tummy? The things I hear and see now are important, as they are my first perceptions of my world.

7 months (32 weeks)

My body is very incredible as it is now developing antibodies, which will protect me against disease and sickness. I sleep a lot now, 90-95% of the day, and sometimes have REM sleep, that means I sleep very deeply and have dreams just like you.

8- 9 months (40 weeks)

Well, ready or not here I come! I weigh approximately 3 kilos, and am more than ready for life outside your womb. One day, I will just "decide" and my brain and will send your body an electro-chemical signal through the placenta and then your contractions and labor will begin. When I am actually born, the placenta will detach from the side of the uterus and the umbilical cord will stop working as I take my first breaths of air. Something amazing will happen when I breathe - structural changes will be triggered in my heart and bypass arteries will force all blood to now travel through my lungs.
