![]() John R. Searle ERROR MSG"The World vs. John R.Searle" Its hard not to enjoy an interview with John R. Searle ofthe Department of Philosophy. He disagrees with just about everyone and, according to TheWall Street Journal, hes often better at explaining his adversaries viewpointsthan they are. Searle, who was fighting a cold during the interview, is perhapsbest known for his Chinese Room Argument in which he refuted the Turing Test, the ideathat if a computer can fool an expert into thinking it understands a topic, then thecomputer really understands the subject. Berlin luxury hotelsDuring this interview, Searle strolled through the history ofphilosophy and picked arguments with famous minds of the past. Though he never minceswords with them, he saves the biggest criticism for himself: Searleconfesses that hethinks hes too lazy. When I invented the ChineseRoom Argument, I thought: Well, that's that. It's obvious. ... That was 20years ago and they're still throwing all this crap at me. You'd be surprised. I can't geton e-mail without more attacks. BOOKS
