Legislative updates-A number of state level funding programs should assist Oakland charterschools, your school must act soon to be eligible. While we may expect areduction in some of the projected funding due to state budgetary problemsschools should definitely take steps to apply for monies for which they areeligible.

ENERGY BLOCK GRANT- charters are eligible for $14,000 or $33/student,whichever is higher to compensate for increased energy costs.YOUR BOARD- must pass an energy conservation resolution before Jan1. OCTwill circulate a sample soon. Enclosed is my own improvised example. Ihave asked CSDC for a sample but this should be sufficient for now and Iwill update if necessary.

ERROR MSGENERGY CONSERVATION RESSOLUTION FOR (YOUR NAME) COMMUNITY SCHOOL

FACTUAL BACKGROUND-Given the increased energy costs experienced inCalifornia and the governors call for state agencies and individualCalifornians to conserve energy the (YOUR SCHOOL) Community Schoolrecognizes and will act on its responsibility to take immediate andsubstantial steps to conserve energy.

Understanding that the state of California will provide Energy Block Grants,or some other similar program to assist schools and school districts inpaying increased energy costs if said schools or school districts haveadopted a resolution identifying energy conservation measures that willresult in a decrease in the amount of energy used by schools within the LEA. These funds are to be utilized for energy conservation measures, increasedenergy costs, or any other one-time educational purpose.

Formal Resolution-The Board of directors of the (YOUR SCHOOL )CommunitySchool hereby adopt the energy conservation program which is expected toresult in a decrease in the amount of energy used by schools within the LEA.(YOUR SCHOOL) Community School will list the specific steps to be carriedout by the energy conservation plan within its organizational policiesbinder.

NEA SCHOOL DESIGN COMPETITION GRANTS AVAILABLEThe National Endowment for the Arts will make a limited number of grants fordesign competitions to stimulate excellence in design in the public realm.This year, there is a special focus on competitons for the design of schoolswith funding for up to ten projects at $75,000 each. The Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA) is introducing a new grant called the "Traditional Arts Development Program" to supportprojects like this.

The Traditional Arts Development Program awards mini-grants up to $1500 to support professional development and mentoring opportunities for organizations and individuals engaged in or planning folk and traditional arts programs in California.

Program for Gender Equity in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, andTechnology

This National Science Foundation (NSF) program focuses on broadening theparticipation of women in all fields of science, math, engineering, andtechnology. Applicants will be awarded funds based on proposals that showsignificant potential for reversing gender-based inequalities related to thelearning and participation of female students in these technical fields ofstudy. The program will award 20 to 25 grants per year from a $3.5 millionpool. Deadlines differ according to the type of institution that is seekingfunds. The earliest of the deadlines, for elementary and middle schools, islisted below.

"National Education Association Foundation Innovation Grants" This grant program is designed to help public education employees improve teaching and learning (including the use of technology). Public K-12 schoolteachers and support personnel are eligible to apply for the grant. Deadline: Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis. Notification for applications postmarked by March 15, 2002, will be made by August 1, 2002. There will be 200 grants of $2,000 each. http://www.nfie.org/programs/innovation.htm

"Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowships" The US Department of Energy manages the fellow program for distinguished elementary and secondary school mathematics and science teachers. Einstein Fellows usually serve for ten months in professional staff positions in the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, DOE, NASA, NSF, NIH, ED, NIST, or OSTP. "2002 Craftsman/NSTA Young Inventors Awards Program" This program challenges students to use creativity and imagination, along with science, technology, and mechanical ability, to invent or modify a tool. The award program is open to students in grades two to eight who are residents of the United States and U.S. Territories. Two national finalists will receive a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond (one winner grades two to five; one winner grades six to eight); 10 national finalists will receive a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond (five winners in each grade category). "MetLife Foundation Tri-Connecting Award" MetLife Foundation and Families and Work Institute announce and solicit applications for the MetLife Foundation Tri-Connecting Award. The award will honor initiatives across the United States that strengthen connections among students, teachers, and parents with their communities to promote student learning and success. Eight awards will include a grant of $2,500 to inspire continued action. Twenty-four finalists and eight winners will be announced in Spring 2002. "Earthwatch Education Awards" Earthwatch is a coalition of citizens and scientists working together to sustain the world's environment, monitor global change, conserve endangered habitats, explore the heritage of our peoples, and foster world health and international cooperation. Earthwatch Institute offers fellowships for K-12 educators to join their two-week field expeditions. Projects range from archeological digs in Peru, to habitat studies in Oregon, to running transects through reefs in the Bahamas. Earthwatch Institute aims to promote multidisciplinary science and social studies curriculum in schools nationwide as well as enrich teachers and enhance the academic experience of students. "The Shaklee Teacher Award" The Glenda B. and Forrest C. CANEC Listserv Announcement

On Wednesday, December 12, CANEC will be sponsoring the first local charterschool symposium in San Francisco. The symposium, entitled, "The Role ofPublicCharter Schools in Promoting Public Education," will highlight the effort ofallpublic charter schools to improve public education within this city andaroundthe state.

This is a great opportunity for the public to learn how public charterschoolsare an important component in improving our public school system. It willalsobe an opportunity for the public to talk to San Francisco charter schoolprincipals, teachers who teach at San Francisco charter schools and parentswhose children attend San Francisco charter schools.

The symposium will feature State Board of Education President Reed HastingsandOakland Mayor Jerry Brown as speakers.

CANEC is pleased to announce the 2nd annual Charter School Job Fair,WednesdayMarch 13, 2002 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the 9th Annual California CharterSchoolConference at the San Francisco Marriott. The job fair will be co-sponsoredbyTeachers-Teachers.com and CharterTeach.

This event is FREE to job seekers and is moderately priced for recruiters.Please see the price table below. More information will be disseminated atthebeginning of the year through our website as well as an informationalmailing,but we wanted to put the buzz in your ear about this forthcoming spectacularevent. This year, the Job Fair will contain two new features to morethoroughlyenhance your experience: the Resume Book and the Interview Sessions.

The Resume Book will consist of resumes of job seekers and be distributed torecruiters before the Fair.
